WORKSHOPS

OIPC Workshops are Back!

Following a COVID-induced pause in programming, OIPC was thrilled to hold an in-person workshop at the Lowe-Volk Nature Center in Crestline on September 1, 2022. It was well-attended with almost 40 people who enjoyed a morning session with speakers and an outdoor afternoon session with hikes and control demonstrations.  We appreciated the support from Crawford Park District for hosting this event. Speakers at the workshop included Jennifer Windus, 3 park district land managers – Kyle Bailey from Crawford Park District, Chris Roshon from Preservation Parks of Delaware County, and Austin Roby from Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District, as well as Madison Brown from the Ohio Natural Areas & Preserves Association.

The Ohio Invasive Plant Council and Metroparks Toledo teamed up to show participants how to learn about identifying and removing invasive plants in your landscape or natural area.  Attendees learned about some of the excellent alternative plants that can be used to replace invasives and about the wildlife that will thank you!  Some plants were available for purchase.

The Dawes Arboretum & Ohio Invasive Plant Council presented "Alternatives for Invasive Plants in Ohio" - June 28, 2018

Invasive plants are non-native species that threaten Ohio’s natural areas by altering the native biodiversity found in our forests, grasslands, prairies and wetlands.  We can help minimize the impact of invasive plants by removing these species when they occur in our landscaping or surrounding habitat and replacing them with more desirable plants. This workshop provided some suggested alternatives of native and ornamental plants that are available in many Ohio nurseries and garden centers.  Live specimens and herbarium plants were on display for hands-on learning and identification, and many alternatives were available for purchase.
